When doctors are in the learning stage, they do not practice on people, but for some reason, veterinarians in Pakistan are being trained on animals.
Veterinary universities in Rawalpindi and Islamabad were discovered to have been conducting their practice on healthy strays picked from the streets. Students, themselves, submitted videos anonymously to expose the disgustingly cruel actions being carried out in their institutions.
The Hippocratic oath of doctors demands that they "first do no harm." Is it not right for veterinarians to follow such for their patients too? Or are we so above these poor animals that we should freely perform atrocious operations on them and leave them to bleed out on our surgery tables? Are we so high and mighty that we should commit such barbaric acts on these innocent animals, whose only fault was to be born in a country full of lawlessness, and have no consequences?
It has always been a Pakistani norm to disrespect and berate these animals, especially since there's no one stopping us from doing so. But, the fact that the future healers of our animals are being made to practice their surgeries on previously fit strays by ripping apart their bodies only goes further to prove that this society only favors the beautiful, the smart, the strong and the rich.
And should we not wonder how these vets are being affected by these practices? Is it not damaging to them as well to take a perfectly healthy living thing and have to cut them up and toy with their organs? Especially when most people that enter this field do so because of their love for animals and desire to see them happy and well? And to then be turned into torturers and murderers for those same animals must be scarring in the worst of ways.
People have never cared for strays, and come to an agreement amongst themselves that they can treat them however they want, and this is one of the worst examples of the abuse they face at human hands. It's high time people realize that we owe animals respect, no matter if they live in our homes or on our streets.
Animals are the most pure out of all of us due to their straightforward thinking. They give love when they receive it, and they attack when they feel threatened. They are not capable of conspiring and scamming, and they are always honest. They deserve more love than we can give. The least we can do is make noise when they are mistreated and manhandled, demand arrest of their offenders and change towards a fairer and safer life for them.
We urge you to report any and all cases of animal abuse to the societies overlooking animal welfare. Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation has been doing marvelous work in this sector. Please write emails to demand the proper implementation of Pakistan's prevention of cruelty to animals act of 1890 and play your part in ensuring that events like this never take place again.
this is so heartbreaking
